Each of the following tips/techniques/practices can buy you a few tenths of a second come raceday, often the difference between in and out of the money.
Best of all, you don't have to believe me - my GPS/HR system will SHOW you the benefits realized on the training track.

I have personally seen improvements of 5-10 Beyer points through the proper use of this tool.
But, you must use it 1 hour prior to the post parade. Too many large stables I work with never take this thing out of the tack room...

Why only use them for injured animals?
Investigate the benefits for young horses in training, using HBOT after breezes to promote stronger bone growth and improved lung development.

| This is not your traditional blood count testing by the vet, instead it's the type of testing that Lance Armstrong does in order to determine his fitness level.
The process takes less than 20 seconds and you have your results from just a pinprick of blood.
Consistent use of this data can help a trainer formulate training strategies that teach horses to use lactic acid as fuel for performance. |
| FLAIR strips work to open nasal passageways and decrease the resistance to breathing, which is often a weak link in the performance process.
Some horses will notice little difference, others will be helped dramatically as their passageways tend to close during intense exercise. |
The spleen of a horse is extremely unique. It stores excess red blood cells, then injects them into the bloodstream upon the introduction of demanding exercise.
This is a natural performance enhancer, but is often poorly understood. If your horse doesn't 'empty' his spleen with regularity during training, the blood in there becomes old and loses it's capacity to carry oxygen.
Learn under what conditions your horse contracts his spleen, and make sure it's full of fresh blood when entering the gate on raceday.
| Ok, I gave you the tips on the spleen for free, but this one will cost you!
Advantages over ice: spa water is super-cooled, water is moving, salts added. Results in a higher percentage of oxygenation of injured tissues.
There is a model installed at Churchill Down Trackside as of this moment, with very reasonable rates.
But, if you need to buy your own, you are looking at tens of thousands of dollars. |
Galloping uphill for horses is akin to weight training in humans.
Simultaneously take pressure off the front shins and develop advanced muscular power in the hindquarters.
Recently a client of mine began using uphill gallops for the first time and within 4 weeks won 7 of 11 starts.
If you aren't lucky enough to be located where uphill gallops are possible, you can look into a high-speed treadmill, which also helps when weather conditions preclude training outdoors.

HR/GPS use at Ballydoyle/Coolmore "It is not just visual monitoring at Ballydoyle, there is also the scientific approach. Heart monitors are fitted to every horse and a GPS armband is on every rider. Data is logged, ready for examination."
JW Race Stables, Louisville, KY "My rider feels things I can't see, I see things he can't feel, and we both miss much of what is going on inside the horse."
Top trainer who wishes to remain anonymous "Knowing that I am giving each horse what he/she needs to improve, with a minimal risk of injury, sure helps my piece of mind, as well as my win percentage."
